1. The HEAO-B/Einstein Craft In Flight
NASA's Einstein Observatory, launched in 1978, was the first large X-ray telescope with mirrors. Einstein accurately located over 7000 X-ray sources and made possible a new way to study the mysterious dark matter that surrounds many galaxies. (artist's illustration: Smithsonian Institution)
