During the last week the observing schedule was replanned to incorporate observations of V404 Cyg and GRB150616A, which were accepted as a Director's Discretionary Time Target of Opportunity and as a Peer-Reviewed TOO respectively on Jun 19. Scheduled observations of NGC1232 and J024656.39-003304.8 were impacted by the replan and will be rescheduled in future weeks. The observing schedule was later interrupted due to high radiation associated with solar activity. The loads were halted at 6:40pm EDT on Jun 22 through a ground command to execute the SI Safing SCS 107. This ensured that the accumulated radiation dose for ACIS remained below the allowed threshold. All spacecraft actions were nominal. A real-time procedure was executed on Jun 22 to disable SCS-29, which was enabled during the safing sequence. Loads for a replanned schedule were uplinked on Jun 23 with 81.2ks of science loss. A planned observation of V794 Aql was impacted by the interruption and will be rescheduled. A Chandra press release was issued on Jun 23 describing observations of the flaring neutron star Circinus X-1 (Cir X-1). Light echoes around Cir X-1 have allowed a precise distance to be determined to it. These light echoes are produced when a burst of X-rays bounces off of clouds. Determining distances in astronomy is notoriously difficult so objects like this are valuable. The new distance measurement to Cir X-1 is over twice that of one previously published value. For details see: http://chandra.si.edu/press/15_releases/press_062315.html Of note this week was the Cycle 17 Peer Review held in Boston, Jun 22-26. The schedule of targets for the next two weeks is shown below and includes an observation of H1743-322, which was accepted as a Target of Opportunity on Jun 8 and is coordinated with the VLA and NuSTAR |
