Operations CXO Status Report

Friday 6 June 2014 9.00am EDT

During the last week Chandra completed the observing schedule as planned.

Real-time procedures were executed on Jun 4: one to perform a routine self-check of the Electrical Interface Assembly (EIA) Sequencer and another to perform diagnostic memory dumps of the Command and Telemetry Unit (CTU) EEPROMs.

A Chandra image release was issued on May 30 discussing observations of giant elliptical galaxies. A new study looks at why some giant elliptical galaxies have such low levels of star formation despite reservoirs of fuel to make them. Outbursts from the supermassive black hole may be preventing the gas from cooling enough to allow stars to form. For details see: http://chandra.si.edu/photo/2014/coldgas/

A Chandra image release was issued on Jun 3 describing observations of M51, also known as the "Whirlpool Galaxy." The Chandra image contains nearly a million seconds of observing time and reveals hundreds of point-like X-ray sources. Most of these point sources are X-ray binary systems with either a neutron star or black hole orbiting a Sun-like star. For details see: http://chandra.si.edu/photo/2014/m51/

The schedule of targets for the next week is shown below and includes an observation of NGC 3310 coordinated with NuSTAR
