Happy New Year from the Chandra team.
During the last two weeks Chandra completed the observing schedule as planned. The IEPHIN instrument exhibited two cases of anomalous behavior during the last two weeks during periods of elevated operating temperature. The power supply voltage dropped as it became current limited due to the high temperature and returned to its nominal value once the unit cooled following a maneuver to a new attitude. An adjustment will be made to the thermal threshold used during mission planning in order to reduce the number of future occurrences. A Chandra press release was made on Jan 5 describing observations of the galaxy cluster MS 0735.6+7421 that indicate enormous eruptions from the central supermassive black hole that have produced associated cavities or bubbles. The eruptions are considered the most powerful ever observed. For details see: http://chandra.harvard.edu/press/05_releases/press_010505.html The schedule of targets for the next week is shown below. |
