Operations CXO Status Report

Friday 8 January 2010 9.00am EDT

During the last week Chandra completed the observing schedule as planned.

A real-time procedure was executed on Jan 6 to perform a routine self-check of the Electrical Interface Assembly (EIA) Sequencer.

A Chandra press release was issued on Jan 4 describing new results from Chandra and the ground-based Magellan telescopes that suggest a dense stellar remnant has been ripped apart by a black hole a thousand times as massive as the Sun. If confirmed, this discovery would be a cosmic double play: it would be strong evidence for an intermediate mass black hole, which has been a hotly debated topic, and would mark the first time such a black hole has been caught tearing a star apart. For details see: http://chandra.harvard.edu/press/10_releases/press_010410.html

A Chandra image release was issued on Jan 5 of Sagittarius A* (Sgr A*), the supermassive black hole at the center of the Milky Way. Astronomers have known for a long time that Sgr A* is relatively quiet compared to other black holes of similar size. A new theoretical model based on a very long Chandra observation of the region may explain the feeble consumption by Sgr A*. For details see: http://chandra.harvard.edu/photo/2010/sgra/

The schedule of targets for the next week is shown below and includes observations of GM Aur coordinated with Gemini/North, DQ Tau coordinated with CARMA, and Cyg X-1 coordinated with RXTE.
