Operations CXO Status Report

Friday 18 December 2009 9.00am EDT

During the last week Chandra completed the observing schedule as planned.

Chandra passed through the last two eclipses of the 2009 winter season on Dec 12 and 15 respectively, with nominal power and thermal performance. Real-time procedures were completed on Dec 15 to disable SCS 29 and to dump and clear the EPS glitch counters as post-eclipse season actions.

A Chandra press release was issued on Dec 17 describing a new study of images from NASA's Chandra X-ray Observatory on supernova remnants, the debris from exploded stars. The study shows that the symmetry of the remnants, or lack thereof, reveals how the star exploded. This is an important discovery because it shows that the remnants retain information about how the star exploded even though hundreds or thousands of years have passed. For details see: http://chandra.harvard.edu/press/09_releases/press_121709.html

Of note this week was the release on Dec 15 of the Cycle 12 Call for Proposals. The proposal submission deadline is 18 Mar 2010. In conjunction with the call was the release of the CIAO 4.2 analysis software system together with CALDB 4.2.0. The release includes a number of enhancements to the Sherpa modeling and fitting package and a new method for gain-correction of HRC event pulse heights.
