Operations CXO Status Report

Friday 21 May 2004 7.30am EDT

During the last week Chandra completed the observing schedule as planned.

On May 15 a real-time procedure was run to patch the ACIS flight software. This patch will correct an occasional error in raw-mode runs in which rows of CCD pixels were dropped from output telemetry and provides a modification that will allow for the future addition of timed-exposure modes without increasing code or testing complexity. The patch load executed normally but was not left on-board when a comparison of the loaded patch list did not match the ground reference file. Subsequent analysis indicated that the reference file was an incorrect version and that the loaded patches had been correct. Process changes are being developed to avoid a re-occurrence of this problem. The patch is expected to be uplinked in the next week.

A Chandra press release was issued on May 18 as a NASA HQ Space Science update. The SSU described Chandra images of multimillion degree gas in galaxy clusters that have provided astronomers with a powerful new method to probe the mass and energy content of the universe. The schedule of targets for the next week is shown below and includes the completion of the long HETG observation of the active galaxy MCG-6-30-15 begun last week.
