Operations CXO Status Report

Sunday 1 August 1999 7.00am EST

The Chandra mission continues to proceed nominally.

The following is an overview of the events that occurred over the last 24 hours.

The third IPS burn occurred successfully at 6:32 pm EDT. This was the only planned perigee burn, it raised Chandra's orbital apogee to 139,108 km, with no significant change in perigee at 3495 km and an orbital period of 60 hours and 8 seconds. Earth Sensor scan 16 was successfully performed. Note, the IPS 3 burn, and the planned IPS 4 burn increases the period of the orbit, which decreases the temporal frequency of the Earth, scans.

After IPS burn #3, three of the nine Resistance Temperature Devices (RTD) have failed on Liquid Apogee Engines (LAE) #3 and one failed on LAE #1. These sensors are used to measure the LAE combustion chamber temperature, which are used for telemetry and as sensors for the onboard computer controlled shut down, should the preset redline temperature be exceeded. The operations team is currently evaluating whether these same engines will be used in he next burn, or whether engines #2 and #4 will be used.

The Aspect Camera System has experienced several FID light Loss of Track (LOT) indications. These have mostly occurred in the radiation zone near perigee, however, one LOT occurred near apogee. The team is performing additional tests to collect more data and has requested the Ball designer to come to Boston to participate in the data review and discussions.
