Operations CXO Status Report

Friday 9 May 2025 9.00am EDT

During the last week Chandra completed the observing schedule as planned.

Real-time procedures were executed on May 8 to perform a routine self-check of the Electrical Interface Assembly (EIA) Sequencer and to perform a diagnostic dump of the Control Processing Electronics (CPE).

A Chandra press and photo release was issued on May 8 describing observations of AT2024tvd. The black hole was recently identified via a tidal disruption event (TDE) where a nearby star was ripped apart and accreted, giving rise to a burst of radiation. In addition to Chandra, the observers used the Hubble Space Telescope and the Very Large Array telescope. The data showed that the black hole is offset from the center of the galaxy. For details, see: https://chandra.si.edu/press/25_releases/press_050825.html

A Chandra image release was issued on May 8 describing three new sonifications, each connected to black holes — using data from NASA’s Chandra, Webb, IXPE, and other telescopes. The first is WR 124, an exceptionally bright, short-lived massive star that may collapse into a black hole in the future. The second sonification is of SS 433, a double system about 6 kpc away. The two members of SS 433 include a solar-type star in orbit around a much heavier partner, either a neutron star or a black hole. The third is of Centaurus A, a galaxy about 4 Mpc away. At the center of Centaurus A is a supermassive black hole that is sending a jet across the entire length of the galaxy. For details see: https://chandra.si.edu/photo/2025/sonify10/

Of note this week was the Chandra Quarterly Review conducted on May 6.

The schedule of targets for the next week is shown below, and includes observations of 4U 1630-47, which was accepted as a Target of Opportunity on Apr 8 and is coordinated with NuSTAR and NICER.
