Operations CXO Status Report

Friday 7 March 2025 9.00am EST

During the last week Chandra completed the observing schedule as planned.

Real-time procedures were executed on Mar 5 to perform a routine self-check of the Electrical Interface Assembly (EIA) Sequencer and to perform a diagnostic dump of the Control Processing Electronics (CPE).

Real-time procedures were executed on Mar 7 to disable SCS-29 and to dump and clear the EPS glitch counters as post-eclipse season actions.

Chandra passed through the 18th, 19th, and 20th (and final) eclipses of the season on Mar 2, 4, and 7, respectively, with nominal power and thermal performance.

Chandra press and image releases were issued on Mar 4 describing the source of X-rays from the white dwarf in the Helix Nebula (WD 2226-210). A new study suggests this X-ray signal could be from planetary debris pulled onto the white dwarf. The study shows that the X-ray signal from the white dwarf has remained approximately constant in brightness between 1992, 1999, and 2002 (with observations by ROSAT, Chandra, and XMM respectively). The data, however, suggests there may be a subtle, regular change in the X-ray signal every 2.9 hours, providing evidence for the remains of a planet exceptionally close to the white dwarf. For details see: https://chandra.harvard.edu/press/25_releases/press_030425.html

The schedule of targets for the next week is shown below and includes an observation of EP250302a, which was accepted as a Director's Discretionary Time Target of Opportunity on Mar 4.
