Operations CXO Status Report

Friday 3 January 2025 9.00am EST

During the last week the observing schedule was interrupted due to high radiation associated with solar activity. The loads were halted at 12:17pm EST on Dec 31 through a ground command to execute the SI Safing SCS 107. This prevented further exposure to damaging radiation for the ACIS instrument detectors. All spacecraft actions were nominal. Real-time procedures were executed on Dec 31 and Jan 1 to disable SCS-29, which was enabled during the safing sequence, and to change the ObsID. Loads for a replanned schedule were uplinked on Jan 2. Planned observations that were impacted by the interruption will be rescheduled.

The Operations Control Center (OCC) was impacted on Dec 29 by a failure of the chiller which provides cooling for the core network and server equipment at the OCC. The resulted in the loss of commanding capability for one communication pass and a rollover of the Solid State Recorder. There was no spacecraft impact or loss of data. Temporary cooling units were put in place to provide nominal cooling, and on Jan 2 the chiller was returned to service.

The schedule of targets for the next week is shown below and includes observations of NGC 5548 and NGC 3783 coordinated with XMM-Newton, an observation of 3C 273 coordinated with XMM-Newton and NuSTAR, an observation of SDSS J021340.14-050149.1, which was accepted as a Target of Opportunity on Dec 10, and an observation of SN2023fyq, which was accepted as a Director's Discretionary Time Target of Opportunity on Dec 23.
