During the last week, the observing schedule was interrupted due to high radiation associated with solar activity. The loads were autonomously halted at Nov 21 1:50 p.m. EST by the ACIS radiation monitor through execution of SCS 107 for SI safing. All spacecraft actions were nominal. A real-time procedure was executed Nov 21 to disable SCS-29, which was enabled during the safing sequence. Planned observations that were impacted by the interruption will be rescheduled. A real-time procedure was completed on Nov 15 to reconfigure the battery reconditioning resistors for battery 1 to adjust the battery trickle charge current. An associated flight software patch was uplinked to update the EPS fault detection logic on the Reconditioning Resistor Relay configuration. These changes are in response to expected efficiency drops due to the aging of the solar arrays. Real-time procedures were executed on Nov 16 and 17 to dump OBC memory as a follow-up to the patch. The dump will be used to update the baseline memory image maintained on the ground. A Chandra image release was issued on Nov 20 describing a new movie of the "Guitar Nebula" - the structure around PSR B2224+65. The guitar shape comes from bubbles blown by particles ejected from the pulsar through a steady wind. In the movie, X-rays from Chandra show a filament of energetic matter and antimatter particles, about two light-years long, blasting away from the pulsar. For details see: https://chandra.si.edu/photo/2024/guitar/ The schedule of targets for the next week is shown below, and includes an observation of PS15bva KISS15s coordinated with the VLA. |
