During the last week the observing schedule was replanned to incorporate observations of EP240315A which was accepted as a Director's Discretionary Time Target of Opportunity on Mar 17. Impacted observations will be rescheduled in a future week. Chandra passed through the 24th and 25th eclipses of the season on Mar 17 and 20 respectively, with nominal power and thermal performance. Chandra press and image releases were issued on Mar 21 describing observations of quasar H1821+643. The black hole in the center of the quasar appears to be underactive. Using Chandra, the team found the density of gas near the black hole in the center of the galaxy is much higher, and the gas temperatures much lower, than in regions farther away. Scientists expect the hot gas to behave like this when there is little or no energy input (which would typically come from outbursts from a black hole) to prevent the hot gas from cooling down and flowing toward the center of the cluster. For details, see https://chandra.harvard.edu/press/24_releases/press_032124.html Of note this week, was a letter to the Chandra Community from the Director. See: https://cxc.harvard.edu/cdo/announcement.html The schedule of targets for the next week is shown below and includes observations of A0620-00, which was accepted as a Director's Discretionary Time Target of Opportunity on Mar 7 and is coordinated with JWST. |
