During the last week Chandra completed the observing schedule as planned. Chandra passed through the 16th and 17th eclipses of the season on Feb 25 and 28 respectively, with nominal power and thermal performance. Chandra press and image releases were issued on Feb 28 describing sonifications of images from NASA’s Chandra X-ray Observatory combined with data from other telescopes. Since 2020, the "sonification" project at NASA’s Chandra X-ray Center has translated the digital data taken by telescopes into notes and sounds. This process allows the listener to experience the data through the sense of hearing instead of seeing it as images. These have been released in conjunction with a new documentary, "Listen to the Universe", about the sonification project. The new sonifications feature MSH 11-52, a supernova remnant blowing a cloud of energized particles resembling the shape of a human hand, M74, a spiral galaxy resembling our Milky Way, and IC 443, nicknamed the Jellyfish Nebula, also a supernova remnant. For details, see https://chandra.harvard.edu/press/24_releases/press_022824.html The schedule of targets for the next week is shown below and includes an observation of GRB240218A, which was accepted as a Director's Discretionary Time Target of Opportunity on Feb 28, observations of SN2023ozo, which were accepted as a Target of Opportunity on Feb 26, and observations of HR1999, which were accepted as a Director's Discretionary Time Target of Opportunity on Feb 26 and are coordinated with XRISM. |
