During the last week Chandra completed the observing schedule as planned. Chandra passed through the 22nd and 23rd eclipses of the season on Oct 29 and Nov 1 respectively, with nominal power and thermal performance. A real-time procedure was executed on Nov 1 to set the short eclipse flag to "true" in preparation for the 24th eclipse of the season. Real-time procedures were executed on Nov 2 to perform a routine self-check of the Electrical Interface Assembly (EIA) Sequencer and to perform a diagnostic dump of the Control Processing Electronics (CPE). A Chandra press release was issued on Oct 30 describing observations with Chandra and IXPE that have been used to examine the pulsar wind nebula known as MSH 15-52. Pulsar wind nebulae are clouds of energetic particles blown away from dead, collapsed stars. MSH 15-52 is well-known for its shape that resembles that of a human hand. IXPE observed this for about 17 days of observing time, the longest look at a single object yet for this mission. The IXPE data provides the first map of the magnetic field in the "hand". For details see: https://chandra.harvard.edu/press/23_releases/press_103023.html The schedule of targets for the next week is shown below and includes observations of AT2023fhn, which are follow-ups to a Target of Opportunity accepted on Apr 21, and an observation of HE 0230-2130, which was accepted as a Director's Discretionary Time Target of Opportunity on Oct 31. |
