During the last week the observing schedule was replanned to incorporate an observation of GRB230506B, which was accepted as a Target of Opportunity on May 8. Time from scheduled observations of ApepPlume and DELSJ091054.53-0414 was impacted by the replan and will be rescheduled in a future week. A Chandra press release was issued on May 9 to recognize the election of Christine Jones Forman to the National Academy of Sciences in honor of her distinguished and continuing achievements in astrophysics research. She has played a pivotal role in the development of the field of X-ray astronomy, spanning NASA missions from the Uhuru X-ray Explorer Satellite to the Einstein Observatory to the Chandra X-ray Observatory. Dr. Jones was a founding member of the Chandra X-ray Center, leading the calibration team for many years and continuing to support the mission through her research and advocacy to the present. The citation for her NAS election reads: "Jones is a defining presence in X-ray astronomy. Using multi-wavelength observations, she discovered and extensively investigated several massive X-ray binaries. She revolutionized our understanding of galaxy clusters, demonstrating that many are dynamically young, tracing their dark matter content, and probing energetic outbursts from supermassive black holes in their central galaxies." The observing schedule for next week includes an observation of SN2022xxf, which was accepted as a Target of Opportunity on Apr 19 and is coordinated with NuSTAR. The schedule, with a planned start of May 15, is still in work. |
