Operations CXO Status Report

Friday 21 April 2023 9.00am EDT

During the last week, Chandra completed the observing schedule as planned.

Chandra passed through the 20th and 21st eclipses of the season on Apr 17 and Apr 19 respectively, with nominal power and thermal performance. Real-time procedures were executed on Apr 17 to dump and clear the EPS glitch counters following the Apr 17 eclipse.

Chandra press and image releases were issued on Apr 20 describing an analysis of the impact of supernovae on nearby planets. The new analysis finds that in addition to prompt radiation and high energy particles created directly in the supernova, there is a third effect on nearby bodies; X-rays generated in the interaction between the supernova's blast wave and ISM gas. These X-rays may impact a nearby planet from months to years after the explosion and may last for decades. Such an event would severely alter a planet's atmospheric chemistry. For details see: https://chandra.harvard.edu/press/23_releases/press_042023.html

The schedule of targets for the next week is shown below and includes observations of SN2021ahpl, which are follow-ups to a Target of Opportunity accepted on Dec 1, an observation of GRB211211A, which was accepted as a Target of Opportunity on Mar 17, and an observation of XTE J1701-462, which was accepted as a Target of Opportunity on Mar 28.
