During the last week Chandra completed the observing schedule as planned. Chandra passed through the 17th, 18th, and 19th eclipses of the season on Apr 9, Apr 11, and Apr 14 respectively, with nominal power and thermal performance. Of note this week, following completion of the process for returning the High Resolution Camera (HRC) to science operations after the 15V power supply anomaly, the first HRC observation planned as part of normal operations was executed on Apr 10. Chandra press and image releases were issued on Apr 10 describing observations of the Crab nebula, the remnants of a supernova about 6,500 light years from Earth, with NASA’s Imaging X-ray Polarimetry Explorer (IXPE), which launched in 2021, and with Chandra. The combination of data from both observatories reveals a predominantly toroidal magnetic field with large local variations of polarization, and contributes to improving understanding of the nebular structure and particle acceleration. For details see: https://chandra.harvard.edu/press/23_releases/press_041023.html The schedule of targets for the next week is shown below and includes an observation of SN2023emq, which was accepted as a Target of Opportunity on Apr 7, observations of SgrA* coordinated with NuSTAR and the Event Horizon Telescope, observations of MCG-03-34-6 coordinated with HST, and an observation of SDSSJ150921.68+0304 coordinated with the Hobby-Eberly Telescope. |
