During the last week Chandra completed the observing schedule as planned. Real-time procedures were executed on Mar 25-26 to dump OBC-A and -B memory as a follow-up to the patch last week to adjust the HRMA Range Check Threshold. The dump will be used to update the baseline memory images maintained on the ground. Chandra passed through the 12th and 13th eclipses of the season on Mar 26 and 29 respectively, with nominal power and thermal performance. A Chandra image release was issued on Mar 29 describing observations of NGC 253 that show the effect of powerful winds being launched in opposite directions from the center of the galaxy. Although it is a spiral like our Milky Way galaxy, NGC 253 is forming stars at a higher rate. These young massive stars and their supernova explosions propel the winds that play an important role in the lifecycle of stars and the galaxy. Researchers used NASA's Chandra X-ray Observatory and other telescopes to study NGC 253. For details see: https://chandra.harvard.edu/photo/2023/ngc253/ Of note this week was the completion of a substantial several-month effort by the CXC to support the resumption of routine HRC science observations. This included work by the FOT and the SOT to update or develop numerous on-board products, procedures, scripts, displays and ground software elements. The schedule of targets for the next week is shown below and includes an observation of Cen X-3, which was accepted as a Target of Opportunity on Mar 28. |
