Operations CXO Status Report

Friday 26 March 2021 9.00am EDT

During the last week Chandra completed the observing schedule as planned.

A real-time procedure was executed on Mar 22 to temporarily raise the HRC-S microchannel plate high voltage settings during a calibration observation. The data collected will be used to update the standard high voltage settings during science observations in order to account for the expected drop in the detector gain during the mission.

A flight software patch was uplinked on Mar 24 to update the stored-command sequence that is used to raise the HRC-I microchannel plate high voltage to the operational level. The update increases the magnitude of the voltage in order to recover a slight loss in X-ray detection efficiency observed over the twenty-one years of operation. Additional real-time procedures were executed on Mar 25 to dump OBC-A memory as a follow-up to the flight software patch. The dump will be used to update the baseline memory image maintained on the ground.

Chandra image releases were issued on Mar 24 featuring "sonified" representations of data on three extensively-studied, iconic cosmic objects: the Chandra Deep Field, the Cat's Eye Nebula, and the galaxy Messier 51. The sonifications, made by combining data from Chandra with additional data from Hubble, Spitzer, and ground-based telescopes, represent astronomical information conventionally presented visually instead by a succession of sounds. The schedule of targets for the next week is shown below and includes observations of TW Hya coordinated with HST.
