During the last week Chandra completed the observing schedule as planned. A real-time procedure was executed on June 26 to perform a full-frame dark current readout of the Aspect Camera Assembly CCD. Chandra passed through the seventh and eighth (and final) eclipses of the season on Jun 23 and 26 respectively, with nominal power and thermal performance. Real-time procedures were executed on Jun 26 to disable SCS-29 and to dump and clear the EPS glitch counters as post-eclipse season actions. A Chandra press release was issued on Jun 25 describing observations of the separate galaxy clusters 1E2215 and 1E2216, located about 1.2 billion light years from Earth, captured as they enter a critical phase of merging. The Chandra observations, analyzed in conjunction with with data from two additional X-ray satellites (ESA’s XMM-Newton and JAXA’s Suzaku) and two radio telescopes (the Low-Frequency Array, a European project led by the Netherlands, and the Giant Metrewave Radio Telescope, operated by the National Centre for Radio Astrophysics of India) fill in an important stage in our understanding of the cluster merging process, just as the merger is starting and a merger shock is forming. For more information see: http://chandra.harvard.edu/press/19_releases/press_062519.html. The schedule of targets for the next week is shown below and includes an observation of 3C273 coordinated with XMM-Newton and NuStar, an observation of Swift J1728.9-3616, which is a follow-up to a Target of Opportunity accepted on Feb 6, and an observation of TWHya coordinated with HST. |
