During the last week Chandra completed the observing schedule as
planned.
Of note last week was a disruption in the flow of dump data from DSN due to a problem at the JPL Central Data Recorder. JPL resolved the issue without data loss, and all backlogged data have now been received and processed. Two Chandra press release was issued last week. The first on 4 Oct described observations from both Chandra and Hubble of the Supernova Remnant N132D in the Large Magellanic Cloud. The X-ray glow in the image is produced primarily by shock wave heating of interstellar gas to temperatures of about 10 million degrees Celsius. The second release was made by HQ on 5 Oct as a NASA Space Science Update and described observations of the Gamma Ray Burst GRB 050709 made with HETE, Chandra and Hubble. The data suggest that the origin of short duration GRBs is the collision of two neutron stars, or a neutron star and a black hole, rather than an exploding star.
