During the last week Chandra completed the observing schedule as planned. A real-time procedure was executed on Jan 31 to swap the prime solid-state recorder (SSR) from the B-side to the A-side. This swap concludes a six-month interval of health and trending data collection on SSR-B. A Chandra press release was issued on Jan 29 describing results from a new approach to determining distance to quasars. Based on data from NASA's Chandra X-ray Observatory, ESA's XMM-Newton, and the Sloan Digital Sky Survey, the new method allows measurement of greater distances than has been possible earlier. While agreeing with the conventional cosmological model at smaller distances, the new approach suggests that there are deviations from the model at the largest distances, corresponding to the earliest stages of the Universe, that can be interpreted in terms of a dark energy density that increases with time.
