Since 1998, Google has changed the logo on its homepage in honor of various holidays, anniversaries, and other events. By clicking on Google’s "Doodle", users are taken to links about that particular subject.

On October 19, 2017, the Google Doodle featured Subrahmanyan Chandrasekhar, the Nobel laureate in physics. This day marks Chandrasekhar’s 107th birthday and it’s especially appropriate given that he did much of his work on neutron stars. Just a few days ago, scientists announced the discovery of a gravitational wave source, a merger between neutron stars, the first ever gravitational wave detection that also emitted light.

Just prior to its launch aboard the Space Shuttle Columbia in 1999, NASA’s Chandra X-ray Observatory was renamed in honor of S. Chandrasekhar. Over 18 years later, his namesake observatory played a major role in this historic discovery. Chandra’s X-ray eyes give us a unique and important view of the cosmos, which may be the most fitting birthday gift of all.
